Buprenorphine therapy is part of a medication-assisted treatment (MAT) program used when the discomfort and pain of withdrawal make beating opiate addiction through abstinence difficult. Methadone works by making the body immune to the effects of opioid drugs and by reducing the painful symptoms of opioid withdrawal.

A partial opioid agonist, buprenorphine works primarily by reducing the physical dependence on opioids. It is contrasted with methadone in that it is available for prescription in additional clinical settings beyond rehabilitation centers, including doctors’ offices, community health centers, and correctional facilities.
