Dealing with Stress Part I

            Often times, it can be difficult to recognize the stressors in our life. Many times it can be more than one stressor that is able to take a toll and negatively impact your attitude. When it comes to drug addiction, this is often the root of the problem. 

            Troubles and anxieties have the ability to snowball into much larger problems if not confronted the right away. The following are four simple ways to begin managing your stress and working through some of the tough problems life throws your way. 

 

One. Follow the 5x5 rule

 

            The 5x5 rule states that if you are facing an issue, ask yourself if your problem is going to matter in five years. If it won’t, don’t spend more than 5 minutes being upset about it. This often puts little stresses into perspective.

 

Two. Find 3 hobbies to distract you

            It is important to have hobbies that you enjoy enough to distract you from life. When it comes to hobbies, a good rule to live by is the following. Have one hobby that keeps you fit, one that allows you to stay creative, and lastly one that has potential to make you money. These do not have to be done all at once, but rather take your time finding ways you love to spend your time.

 

            Especially when it comes to addiction recovery, finding hobbies that require your time and attention are vital for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. 

 

Three. Keep a journal

 

            Often times when dealing with stress, you need an escape. A journal is a way to let it all out, without telling others about your fears and anxieties which at times, can be overwhelming. Instead, start by using a journal as a way to decompress. At least once a day write out the things that you are grateful for, how you dealt with certain stresses, and what helped you get through the day. 

 

 

Four. Meditate daily

 

            Having 10-20 minutes to yourself in silence, or even listening to music or a podcast can refresh your brain and allow you to come back with a new mindset. Taking a walk or a hike can dramatically change your attitude towards the problems you’re dealing with.

            There are many ways we all deal with our stressors in life, and these are just some of the ways that you can effectively manage your stress. But remember, if your stress/anxiety is taking a toll on your daily life it never hurts to get someone else involved. Having a helping hand is something we all need at one point or another.
