Asking for Help from Addiction

The older we get, the bigger our problems become and with that asking for help becomes more and more daunting. We feel as though it is our responsibility to deal with our issues on our own. Seeking help is looked as a sign of weakness.

But why?

The fear of being known as “weak” to others is so intimidating we avoid it at all costs. But it is important that you take those steps to get the help you need. The sooner that you decide to reach out for help, the simpler the problem has already become. Carrying all the weight of an issue is not an adequate response to dealing with hardship.

Asking for help may not be the easiest but it sure will be the most courageous step you can take for your own sake. By putting away the shame, guilt, ego and fear that has developed from being drug dependant, you are better equipped to building bridges to getting the help you deserve for a better quality of life.

When it comes to addiction there are so many various routes you can take for a more sustainable lifestyle. The first step towards drug addiction help is going to your doctor to get a referral. By talking to your doctor, or any of the 3,500+ board certified physicians that specialize in addiction you are beginning the journey to a healthier lifestyle. Additionally, tracking your drug use/urges can allow you to have a better idea of the role that those substances play in your life. Rehab facilities and/or an addiction counselor can utilize this information to gain a better understanding of you, and your needs during this time.

Remember, seeking help is not a weakness in fact it is quite the opposite. It takes strength and courage to do what is best not only for you, but those around you. By asking for help you are not being a burden. Although you may feel vulnerable, being honest and explaining your drug or alcohol dependency you are taking the proper steps to achieving a life free from drugs or alcohol.
